The Lady Is A Tramp (Parody)

Das Portrait über „The Lady Is A Tramp“ und seine sinatrabezogene Geschichte wäre nicht vollständig, ohne einige Gelegenheiten und Aufnahmen zu erwähnen, bei denen Sinatra die Melodie von Richard Rodgers mit speziell geschriebenen neuen Texten dazu benutzte, Freunde und Weggefährten aus Showbusiness und Politik auf humorvoll-musikalische Weise hochleben zu lassen – wie stets bei solchen Anlässen konnte er sich dabei auf die kreative Feder seines „Haustexters“ Sammy Cahn (1913-1993) verlassen.

Doch auch rein musikalisch haben diese besonderen Aufnahmen ihren Reiz, denn anders als sonst sang Sinatra das Stück hier gelegentlich auch als Duett mit Klavier – und interessanterweise benutzte er für voll orchestrierte Versionen auch nach 1974, anders als in seinen Konzerten, noch das Nelson-Riddle-Arrangement von 1956. Zudem stammen gleich zwei Aufnahmen von 1972 und somit aus der Zeit, in der Sinatra eigentlich „im Ruhestand“ war...

Parodie I: DAVID „GENERAL“ SARNOFF (1967)

Der erste mit einer speziellen „Tramp“-Version Geehrte war David Sarnoff (1891-1971), der seit der Gründung 1919 als General Manager an der Spitze von RCA (Radio Corporation of America) stand. Sarnoff stammte aus einem kleinen Dorf in Weißrußland in der Nähe von Minsk und war zusammen mit seinen jüdischen Eltern 1900 in die USA gekommen. Bevor er RCA zum Mediengiganten aufbaute, hatte er unter anderem im Telegraphenamt gearbeitet. Schon Ende der Zwanziger Jahre erkannte Sarnoff das ungeheure Potential des Fernsehens und förderte die neue Technik nach Kräften, wurde so zum Pionier einer neuen Zeit, und seine beherrschende Art ebenso wie diverse militärische Auszeichnungen brachte ihm bald den Spitznamen „Der General“ ein. Erst 1970 zog er sich nach 51 Jahren vom RCA-Chefposten zurück – nach seinem Tod ging es mit der Firma rasch bergab, heute existiert sie nur noch als Markenname.

Am Unabhängigkeitstag 1967 feierte Sarnoff im New Yorker St.Regis-Hotel seine Goldene Hochzeit, und zu diesem Anlaß überraschte ihn Sinatra mit „The Gentleman Is A Champ“, einem auf Sarnoffs Werdegang gemünzten Text, den Sammy Cahn höchstpersönlich am Piano begleitete. Auch für Lacher war dabei gesorgt, etwa wenn Sinatra über ihn sang: „Soviel Männlichkeit habe ich selten gesehen, in meinen Alpträumen glaub ich, er hält sich für mich“. Auch die Tatsache, daß Sarnoff den Umtrieben des „Rat-Packs“ in Vegas eher kritisch gegenüberstand, verstand Sinatra in der Zeile „He frowns at The Clan“ zum Ausdruck zu bringen.

RCA Victor, das Label, bei dem FS während seiner Zeit bei Tommy Dorsey einst selbst unter Vertrag gestanden hatte, schnitt Sinatras Darbietung mit und ließ spezielle 45rpm-Singles davon herstellen, als Souvenir für die Festgäste, die heute natürlich zu begehrten Sammlerstücken geworden sind.

Parodien II-III: SPIRO „TED“ AGNEW (1972)

Bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen 1968 hatte Sinatra noch den demokratischen Kandidaten Hubert Humphrey unterstützt (den Nachfolger des ermordeten Robert Kennedy), der dann die Wahl knapp gegen Richard Nixon verlor – vier Jahre später aber engagierte er sich für den Wahlkampf der Republikaner. Allerdings unterstützte Sinatra nicht Nixon direkt (gegen den war ja außer 1968 schon 1960 mit seinem Engagement für John F. Kennedy quasi zu Felde gezogen war), sondern Nixons Vizepräsidenten Spiro T. Agnew (1918-1996), der eigentlich Spiro Theodoros Agnastopoulos hieß, dessen Vater aus Griechenland stammte und mit dem Sinatra sich auch privat angefreundet hatte; mehrfach waren beide zusammen auf dem Golfplatz gesichtet worden.

Wahlkampfauftritte Sinatras waren, ob auf nationaler oder bundesstaatlicher Ebene, seit vielen Jahren Tradition; am bekanntesten ist natürlich sein Song „High Hopes For Kennedy“ geworden, der die Präsidentschaftswahl 1960 begleitete. Agnew aber gelang es 1972, Sinatra trotz dessen offiziellen Rücktritts im Jahr zuvor für spezielle Darbietungen zu gewinnen. Sammy Cahn schrieb dafür gleich zwei verschiedene neue Texte von „The Gentleman Is A Champ“, von denen der erste (=#2) bereits während der Vorwahlen im Frühjahr bei einem Parteikonvent in Baltimore, wo Agnew 1966-68 als Gouverneur des US-Bundesstaats Maryland residiert hatte, zum Einsatz kam. Ende Oktober 1972 dann, als der Wahlkampf in die Endphase ging, präsentierte Sinatra in Chicago eine zweite Fassung (=#3). In beiden Fällen ließ er sich diesmal nur in den ersten beiden Strophen von Bill Miller am Klavier begleiten, danach übernahm ein komplettes Orchester, das Nelson Riddles Swingarrangement von 1956 folgte.

Die Anspielungen im Text waren natürlich auf Agnews Karriere gemünzt und auf dessen berühmt-berüchtigte „scharfe Zunge“, eine ausgefeilte Rhetorik, mit der er vor allem zu Frontalangriffen gegen die liberale Presse ansetzte (was FS, bekanntlich selbst kein Pressejünger, genüßlich mit „no other Vice-Prez, counting them all/has dared to call/the press/a mess!"“kommentiert) und Gegner des Vietnamkrieges attackierte: „Er benutzt Worte wie andere Leute Knüppel“, sang Sinatra. Im Wahlkampf 1972 hielt Agnew sich aber im Vergleich zu früheren Auftritten damit sehr stark zurück, was ebenfalls in den Liedzeilen angesprochen ist („he keeps his composure, whatever the cracks“).

Zwar gewannen Nixon und Agnew die Wahlen 1972 mit großem Vorsprung, doch noch bevor Nixon wegen des Watergate-Skandals sein Amt verlor, rollte schon im Oktober 1973 der Kopf seines Vizepräsidenten. Mit dem Vorwurf konfrontiert, zu Gouverneurszeiten in Maryland massiv Steuern hinterzogen zu haben, trat Agnew als Vizepräsident zurück, zog sich aber anschließend auf das amerikanische Rechtsinstitut des „nolo contendere“ („kein Widerspruch“) zurück, das einem Angeklagten ermöglicht, unter Inkaufnahme einer – in diesem Falle dann auch erfolgten – Verurteilung die Vorwürfe weder zuzugeben noch zurückzuweisen. Sein Verhältnis zu Sinatra kühlte dann ein wenig ab; von allen politischen Ämtern ausgeschlossen arbeitete Agnew bis zu seinem Tod in der Privatwirtschaft.

Richard Starkey, weltbekannt als Schlagzeuger der Beatles unter dem Namen Ringo Starr (*1940), heiratete 1965 die neunzehnjährige Maureen Cox (1946-1994); die Ehe, aus der drei Kinder hervorgingen, hielt bis 1975. Wie auch zu den drei anderen „Pilzköpfen“, deren zwei Welthits „Yesterday“ und „Something“ er für Reprise auch selbst eingespielt hatte, während einst seine Capitol-Aufnahme von „September In The Rain“ (1960) die frühen Beatles zu einer eigenen Cover-Version (1962 bei Decca) inspiriert hatte, so unterhielt Sinatra auch zu Ringo freundschaftliche private Kontakte.

Im Mai 1973, noch vor seinen ersten Studio-Sessions für das Comeback-Album, ging Sinatra ins Studio, um eine besondere Überraschung für Maureen Starr zu produzieren, die er bis dahin nicht persönlich kannte: „The Lady Is A Tramp“ mit einem neuen Text von Sammy Cahn, begleitet von Bill Miller am Klavier. An ihrem Geburtstag am 4. August wurde ihr das Stück überreicht, das Sinatra auf eigene Kosten als Single produzieren ließ.

Cahns Feder glänzt mit ironischen Anspielungen („she married Ringo while she could have had Paul“, „she sleeps with Ringo but the thinks of me“) und legt Sinatra gar die lakonische Halbzeile „I’m just FS“ in den Mund – ein echtes Schmankerl ebenso wie ein schönes Stück Musikgeschichte.

There’s no one like her, but no one at all,
and as for charms, hers is like wall-to-wall,
she married Ringo, and she could have had Paul...

Parodie V: ORSON WELLES (1975)

Für kaum einen seiner Schauspielerkollegen hegte Sinatra so große aufrichtige Bewunderung wie für den gleichaltrigen Orson Welles (1915-1985), dessen genialer Streifen „Citizen Kane“ das Multitalent 1941 schlagartig weltberühmt gemacht hatte. Und so war es für Sinatra selbstverständlich, an der großen Gala mitzuwirken, die das American Film Institute im Februar 1975 veranstaltete, als man Welles mit einem Lifetime Achievement Award ehrte.

Wieder stand Sammy Cahn bereit, um Sinatra einen passenden Text zu „The Gentleman Is A Champ“ in den Mund zu legen, vielleicht einer seiner witzigsten ist dabei herausgekommen. Natürlich werden Meilensteine in Welles‘ Karriere erwähnt, vom legendären Panik verbreitenden Hörspiel „War Of The Worlds“ (1938) über „Citizen Kane“ zum „Dritten Mann“. Aber auch Welles‘ vielseitige Begabung wird in Verse gegossen: „Produce, direct, write, and star in a play / like [Lawrence] Olivier / a wiz / he is“. Seine Vorliebe für Shakespeare kommt ebenfalls zur Sprache (Welles hatte u.a. Macbeth und Othello aufwendig verfilmt). Und schließlich erfreut uns Sinatra sogar mit einer seiner seltenen Stimmenimitationen – alles begleitet von der ersten Zeile an von einer entspannt swingenden Bigband.

Parodie VI: LEW WASSERMAN (1986)

Am zeitlichen Schluß des parodistischen Reigens steht wiederum eine schon zu Lebzeiten legendäre Figur aus dem Mediengeschäft, nämlich Lew Wasserman (1913-2002), von 1936 bis 1998(!) sechs Jahrzehnte lang der prägende Kopf von MCA (Music Corporation of America) und daneben über Universal Pictures auch einer der großen Filmmagnaten Hollywoods. Ähnlich wie „General“ Sarnoff war auch Wasserman russisch-jüdischer Abstammung und hatte seine Produzentenkarriere mit kleineren Theaterprojekten in Cleveland begonnen, bevor er bei MCA zum „Macher“ aufstieg.

1986 feierte Wasserman sein Goldenes Dienstjubiläum bei MCA, und aus diesem Anlaß war Sinatra extra ins Studio gegangen, um zusammen mit Bill Miller am Klavier eine wiederum von Sammy Cahn getextete Version seines „Gentleman Is A Champ“ einzuspielen. Die Aufnahme ließ Sinatra in einer Auflage von 800 Stück auf einer speziellen vergoldeten Plastik-Single pressen, die bei der großen Gala in den Universal Studios in Los Angeles in einem farbigen Plastikschuber als Souvenir an die geladenen Gäste verteilt wurde – ähnlich wie die Sarnoff-Single von 1967 heute ein begehrtes Sammlerstück. Am 12.12.1986, Sinatras 71. Geburtstag, wurde die Gala dann auch im Fernsehen ausgestrahlt.

Cahn hatte natürlich inzwischen schon Routine beim Anpassen des Textes an neue Lebensläufe, doch gelang ihm diesmal ein ganz besonders schöner Einzeiler: Wassermans frühes Vorbild und einziger Vorgesetzter war der MCA-Gründer Dr. Jules Stein (1896-1981), nicht zu verwechseln mit dem Komponisten und jahrzehntelangen Sinatra-Weggefährten Jule Styne (1905-1994). Daraus machte Cahn für Sinatra: „My Styne was Jule [gesprochen: Juleee]/his Stein was Jules“ .
